Automate backups with the API and MCP

Advanced 7 min

Identify project files, build backups and verify them with Bundlekeep's three engine tools over HTTP or MCP.

The three tools

Bundlekeep’s logic is also available as normal usefulweb tools, so scripts and AI agents can use it without the workspace:

ToolWhat it does
bundlekeep-project-identifierNames the app and format of one project file, counts embedded data, computes its SHA-256 and lists warnings.
bundlekeep-backup-builderPacks a list of project files into one Bundlekeep backup with a checksum per file; identical files are added once.
bundlekeep-backup-verifierChecks every checksum of a backup, lists the files and writes a restore checklist; can extract one file.

Each tool has a page with a form, a JSON API and an MCP tool. The Bundlekeep site lists them under “For AI agents”.

Call the API

Send a POST request with a JSON body to /api/v1/tools/<tool id>/calculate on the Bundlekeep host:

POST /api/v1/tools/bundlekeep-backup-builder/calculate
{ "name": "Workshop", "projects": "[{\"format\":\"tonegrid\", …}, {\"name\":\"kitchen.kerfwise.json\",\"content\":\"…\"}]" }

projects is a JSON array given as text. An entry can be a project object, or {"name": …, "content": …} when you want to keep the exact file text and name. The answer contains a summary, the inventory and a backupFile download link (valid for about two hours).

The verifier takes the backup text in backup or an uploaded file in backupFile, plus an optional extract with an exact file name. Its checklist field is the Markdown restore checklist with links to each app.

Use MCP

The Bundlekeep host has its own MCP endpoint at /mcp. tools/list shows the three engine tools and the related site tools; tools/call runs them with the same arguments as the API. The format of a backup is published as /project.schema.json, so an agent can build or check backups without guessing.

A practical routine

  1. Export project files from your apps into a folder.
  2. Let a script send them to bundlekeep-backup-builder and store the backup file.
  3. Once a month, run bundlekeep-backup-verifier on the stored backups and look at the Changed count.
  4. Open the backup in the workspace whenever you need to restore something.

Privacy

The API runs on the server: what you send is processed to answer the request and the downloads expire after about two hours. Do not send backups with secrets or sensitive personal data to the API — use the workspace, which works entirely in your browser.
